Our thoughts on localisation
Writing is a human thing. Human thoughts, distilled. Considerately combining words, in a specific way, for a specific purpose, in a specific scenario, to specific users.
Translation is more than switching the language. Cultural aspects matter. How objects, scenarios, concepts are perceived are different. You can translate or you can localise. Localisation should be done by a native speaking person.
Tone of Voice is flexible. It matters what you want to achieve, who you are talking to, and the context of the copy. The same Tone of Voice will differ depending on these parameters.
Tooling for UX writing is non-existent. Content Designers work in tools made for other people. In Figma for designers. In text docs for long form writers. In sheets for Accountants. In localisation managers for developers. We need tools that are made for writers, and that support the process of writing.
Artificial Intelligence is for ideation. Generative Large Language Models are great tools for generating. Not for decision making.
Collaboration is essential. A writer is nothing without a designer, which is nothing without a developer. Everyone needs access. Everyone has their unique perspective.
Everyone is a writer. Product Managers, Designers, Developers, Customer Care, everyone is a writer. Not everyone knows how to write, but everyone needs to write.
